Formation of Selves
In this photographic series, I attempt to delve into and question the intricate relationship between the societal definitions of womanhood and personal identity. Each image is deliberately composed, with models' heads obscured by black boxes featuring strategic cutouts, directing the viewers' gaze to specific fragments of the female body—a single eye, a mouth, or a hand. This selective visibility suggests how society chooses to see women and how they navigate their self-identity amid these fragmented perspectives.
Through my work, I aim to provoke a deep contemplation about women's self-perception—how we define ourselves through the eyes of others and how our identities are shaped amidst constant observation and judgment. I focus particularly on the internal dialogues of women and how they perceive themselves in relation to others, questioning their place in the wider world through their own lenses.
Moreover, I seek to break the conventional molds of female identity. The transgender women hold a special intrigue for me, offering profound insights into the questioning of traditional gender roles as they affirm their gender identities. To me, their voices and perspectives are essential to understanding the diversity of what it means to be a woman.
This collection is an endeavor to not only display the multidimensional and complex nature of female identity but also to invite viewers to join an evolving dialogue about the essence of true womanhood. They represent a manifestation of female identity in the real world and my personal exploration of how women define themselves and are defined by others.
